Alert Carolina Informational Message: Central North Carolina is under an Excessive Heat Warning

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Central North Carolina from noon to 8 p.m. today. An excessive heat warning means the temperature will be dangerously high. There will be a high temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit with heat index values of 105-114 degrees.

Facilities staff and campus safety officials are prepared to respond to emergencies as needed.

Use caution if you have outdoor plans. Stay hydrated and limit exposure during the hottest time of the day.

If you or someone is experiencing any signs of heat-related illness, dial 911 immediately. Signs of heat-related illness may include:

elevated body temperature
rapid heart rate
headache
nausea
weakness
dizziness
fainting
muscle cramps
seizures
confusion

Tips for staying cool

Drink plenty of water
Limit your time outdoors and take extra precautions if you do need to go outside
Dress in loose, light-colored clothing
Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these contribute to dehydration
Closely monitor yourself and those around you for signs of heat-related illness
