Town of Chapel Hill Police Investigate Armed Carjacking

On Wednesday evening (June 12), the Town of Chapel Hill Police Department issued the following information regarding the report of a carjacking off-campus early Wednesday morning:

“The Chapel Hill Police Department responded to the report of a carjacking in the 900 block of North Columbia Street at 4:49 a.m. Wednesday, June 12.

The victim stated that multiple suspects approached her, one displaying a handgun, and forced her to turn over her vehicle.

The suspects fled in two vehicles. Officers were able to locate the vehicles, and the suspects fled on foot.
Upon investigation, it was determined that the second vehicle was reported stolen out of Durham. That vehicle has been recovered by the Durham Police Department.

Jahquez A. Mitchell, 17, of Greensboro was apprehended in the attempts to flee from officers. He’s been charged with a felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony larceny of a vehicle, and misdemeanor resisting public officer. He was taken to Orange County Jail and held on a $125,000 secured bond.

The Town of Chapel Hill Police Department continues to investigate and seek the apprehension of the remaining suspects.
