Alert Carolina UNC will close at 6 p.m. tonight until at least 10 a.m. Friday
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
Due to the latest weather forecasts and a National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory calling for snow, sleet and freezing rain during rush-hour traffic along with ice accumulation and below-freezing temperatures tonight and tomorrow, UNC-Chapel Hill will close starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 5, until at least 10 a.m. on Friday, March 6.
Classes will be cancelled; offices will be closed. (Condition 3)
The University currently plans to reopen at 10 a.m. on Friday. Classes will be held; offices will be open. (Condition 1)
For Students and Faculty
All classes, including night classes, will be canceled between 6 p.m. tonight and 10 a.m. Friday, March 6. Arrangements to make up missed classes are at the discretion of the faculty member. (Condition 3)
Classes will resume starting at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6, on a regular schedule. (Condition 1)
For Employees
All University offices, including those operating night (second and third) shifts, will close starting at 6 p.m. (Condition 3) Severe weather essential (mandatory) employees are required to report to work as directed by their management. Non-mandatory employees must not report to work. Under state Emergency Closing policy, non-mandatory employees will not have to use personal leave when Condition 3 is in effect.
Offices will reopen starting at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6, on a regular schedule. (Condition 1)
Friday Operations
The University is committed to announcing a change in classes or work shifts as far in advance as possible to give students, faculty and staff as much lead time as possible for planning travel to and from class and work.
If the plans to reopen on Friday at 10 a.m. change due to actual conditions, the University will make another announcement no later than 8 a.m.

UNC uses three main adverse weather operating conditions: Condition 1 (open), Condition 2 (classes canceled; University has suspended non-mandatory operations; offices are open and non-mandatory employees should report to work if possible) or Condition 3 (classes canceled; offices closed).
Reports of state government closings do not apply to the University. The University generally announces adverse weather news on www.unc.edu, the campus information sources listed below, and through the Triangle and Triad area news media. Unless a change is announced, the University always operates under Condition 1 – regular schedule.
