Adverse Weather Alert: University monitoring weather; regular schedule until 5 p.m. today

03/05/2015, 11:00 a.m.

With a winter weather advisory in effect for later today, University officials are closely monitoring conditions and evaluating the safety implications for the campus community. Those efforts will include close coordination with Chapel Hill Transit regarding any potential changes to its operating schedule tonight.

Based on the current information available, the University will operate on a regular schedule – classes will be held; offices open (Condition 1) – until 5 p.m. today.

By 2 p.m., the University is committed to announcing any change for classes or work shifts starting after 5 p.m. to give students, faculty and staff as much lead time as possible for planning travel to and from class and work.

Adverse Weather Background

Safety is the University’s number one priority when considering the impact of winter weather on campus operations. Please continue to check the University’s homepage, www.unc.edu, and official Twitter account (@UNC) for updates about University operations, along with the information sources listed below.

UNC uses three main adverse weather operating conditions:  Condition 1 (open), Condition 2 (classes canceled; University has suspended non-mandatory operations; offices are open and non-mandatory employees should report to work if possible) or Condition 3 (classes canceled; offices closed).

Reports of state government closings do not apply to the University. The University generally announces adverse weather news on www.unc.edu, the campus information sources listed below, and through the Triangle and Triad area news media. Unless a change is announced, the University always operates under Condition 1 – regular schedule.

Employees (SPA and EPA non-faculty) are reminded of the University’s Adverse Weather Policy and Emergency Closing Policy (https://hr.unc.edu/benefits/leave-holidays/weather-emergency/). See the Adverse Weather Policy Clarification for Employees for more details. (http://www.alertcarolina.unc.edu/go/doc/1395/2092545/Adverse-Weather-Policy-Clarification-for-Employees)
