Alert Carolina Informational: Police Investigating Carjacking

Students, Faculty, and Staff:

Around 12:43 a.m. today, April 5, Chapel Hill Police responded to a report of a carjacking in the 100 block of W. Franklin Street. A UNC student parked their vehicle in the Carolina Square Parking Deck, and an unknown male stole the student’s car at gunpoint. The suspect fled the area with the victim’s car.

There is no continuing threat to campus. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to identify the suspect.

UNC Police advises the community to exercise caution and report any information to either Chapel Hill Police or UNC Police.

Anyone with information should call 911, UNC Police or the Chapel Hill Police Department. The Chapel Hill Police Department can be reached at 919-968-2760 (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday). The UNC Police Department is available 24 hours a day by calling 911 in an emergency or 919-962-8100 for non-emergency assistance. Officers are also available in person at the Public Safety Building located at 285 Manning Drive.
